A suspended ceiling, or dropped ceiling, typically takes the shape of a matrix of steel supports with rectangular or square tiles placed in between, which is hung below the roof structure or floor above to provide an area for HVAC, cables and pipes, and to create an appealing look and feel with no visible clutter.

The suspended ceiling was invented in 1958 by an American called Donald Brown and it has evolved little since that time. Suspended ceilings are generally rarely seen in the home, yet are usually found in office and commercial environments where property construction methods are different and more utilities including air conditioning, PA systems and fire detection are made use of.

Suspended ceilings are not with no down sides, nevertheless, and can become unsightly after a number of years of installation. Commonly, the panels can become discoloured as a result of tobacco smoke or water leakage. Panels can sag down, or repeated taking out and reinstallation for repair can result in the edges and corners of the panels becoming ruined.
